User Menu

The 'User Menu' module is an instance of mod_mainmenu listed in Modules -> Site Modules which Menu Name is 'usermenu' as defined in the Menu Manager.

Often, user menus contain links for editing or checking content. They can also contain links to parts of your site you don't want all visitors to see.

User Menu Access

Only registered users who log into your site can see user menus (if published with the access parameter Registered  through the configuration of the Module). This is the default for the 'User Menu' installed with Joomla.

To create a user menu, create a new Menu, its related Module and set the access level of the Module to Registered (if you want all registered users to view the menu) or Special (if you want only special users to view the menu). Registered and Special Users are defined in the User Manager (Site -> User Manager -> Add/Edit Users).

You could also decide to have only some items of the menu configured with the 'Special' access. A 'Registered' user may have access to the 'Details' menu item but not to the 'Submit News', 'Submit Web Link' or 'Check-in My Items' menu items.
In order to get this result, the User Menu module should be configured with a 'Registered' access level and the specific Menu Items with the 'Special' access level.
In order to configure the Menu Items of the User Menu, go to Menu -> usermenu. Specify for each item the access level desired.

The result of this last configuration will be that only users whom you have defined as 'Special' can see the related Menu Items and submit from the Frontend, while 'Registered' users may have access to their 'Details' only and 'Public' users may not see the menu at all.

Common Menu Items

Some URLs are essential to Joomla default usermenu. If you accidentally delete this menu, you may create a new menu, then create Link - Url Menu Items with the following Urls:
  • index.php?option=com_user&task=UserDetails lets access to the User details (when registered).
  • index.php?option=com_content&task=new&sectionid=1&Itemid=0 lets users with the adequate access submit directly a new Content Item in the News section. By default the News Section has an ID of 1. You may replace the sectionid=1 part of the url by any sectionid=a-figure where figure is the ID # of one of your published sections as displayed through Content -> Section Manager
  • index.php?option=com_weblinks&task=new lets the user propose a new Weblink
  • index.php?option=com_user&task=CheckIn lets the user check-in the items he has edited
Other examples
    • index.php would just let you link to your home page
